If you’ve got a custom home or you simply have a more eclectic taste than the average homeowner, then you probably want to find some outdoor lighting features that are an expression of your personality as well. After all, the outside of your home is really what most people see. If you want to give them a certain impression of your style, this is a great place to start. The problem with a lot of wall lighting fixtures is that they are awfully boring. You can remedy this situation by getting a custom designed or crafted outdoor wall sconce that can proudly display your artistic side.

Many of the models you’ll find at the local home improvement are often in the more conservative side. They have the models that come in black and black. This is true for the most part. However, one thing you will not have to concern yourself with is the wiring. If it is a wired wall sconce, then the UL rating and regulations will likely make it such that the scone is of a standard coding. Mostly, the unit needs to be weatherproof to avoid any electrical problems. You may not find this with a custom wall sconce made by a local artist.

This is not an absolute. In many cases, a scone is just like a cover or piece that fits around the electrical fixture itself. If this is the case with your situation, you only need to concern yourself with how you will hang the sconce. If it is on brick, a masonry bit will do the job to give you a nice secure place to mount the sconce. Sometimes, they are made to screw right into the places on the electrical box itself. This makes installation even easier for the DIYer.

So, as you browse online for the type of style that you think will work best for your particular exterior home décor needs, keep local artists in mind. Often, you can find that metal workers and craftsmen will display their wares at the fairs or local galleries. In some instances, they may even have some arrangement with local nurseries or other patio related stores in your area. These can be great places to find really unique and custom outdoor wall sconce designs.

Landscaping is a very important part of making your home more beautiful and raising the initial value. However, much of our lawn and gardening improvements to our home lose their beauty after dark, since they cannot be seen to be appreciated. Aside from the beauty landscaping brings our home, accenting certain features like paths with lighting is a great idea.

Traditionally, outdoor solar yard lights has received a bad reputation as being inefficient and costly. While this may have been true of first generation solar lights with very primitive technology, solar lighting on the market today has been markedly improved. Previous photo-voltaic cells in solar lights could not convert the sun’s UV rays efficiently, so the batteries which held the stored power could only fuel the lights for a few hours before they grew increasingly dimmer.

Solar technology now allows for more efficient conversion of UV rays which means the photo-voltaic cells in each solar lamp are able to convert in a better ray to electricity ratio, which means they fuel the battery better and they can last much longer at night. In fact, current technology allows for solar lamps stay on for around three days on one full charge of their battery, which in turn means you need less direct sunlight than previously needed to keep your lawn lit at night.

That is not to say you will not need direct sunlight in order for these lamps to work properly, but if you live in an area that does not receive direct sunlight 24 hours a day, solar yard lighting is now much more viable for you. Unfortunately, it is still the most expensive form of lighting on the market, after fluorescent, incandescent, and LED lighting. This initial cost steers many people away from it, but the electricity you can save by having pure solar lighting installed will eventually pay you back over a period of a few years, which makes the investment entirely worth it.

Making your new deck stand out from all others in your neighborhood is easy to do with recessed deck lighting.  The right amount of illumination can also add a touch of class to an otherwise ordinary structure.  There are many options when it comes to where to place the lights.  Some fixtures can be installed right into the stairs while others can go around the perimeter on the top rails and posts. You also have the option of either solar or electric fixtures.  If you do choose electrical fixtures, make sure you also add a transformer to drop the house electric current down to 12 volt, which is what most outside lights require for operation.

Subtle placement of your lights is important, you don’t want to be staring at a glare when trying to relax outside, and you definitely do not want to place them in areas where they will cast shadows and cause accidents as people maneuver on or around your deck.  You can choose to have a contractor or electrician come to your home to give you an estimate but if you like doing your own home improvement projects, consider doing the job yourself. Most recessed deck lights are available in kits and can be found at your local home improvement store.  You can also find plenty of choices online. Everything you need is in the kit and only common household tools are needed for installation. Most outdoor lights are made from heave duty materials such as metal or plastic which can even be walked on, and they come in a variety of finishes to match your décor.

If you don’t want to cut holes in your deck you can add solar deck post lighting, these can be added to composite, cedar or vinyl posts or rails. You can also find solar deck step lighting which is intended specifically for the access steps of your deck.  They also come in kits and can transform the function and beauty of your deck without the need for hard wiring. You should always plan ahead no matter what type of lighting you choose but recessed deck lighting can definitely be considered a do it yourself project if you are able to follow the installation instructions fully.

Installing lights to your patio and decking areas is a fantastic way to show them off in all their glory. Your garden should be a place of relaxation and comfort, and adding lighting will allow you to spend more time there. Before you even think about buying the fittings and fixtures you should draw up a plan of the area you want to illuminate. The reason is so that you can decide what kind of lights will go where. Most people have a combination of lighting for steps, walkways and for illuminating any sitting spaces. You can also try to cast light on other garden features such as ponds and flowers.

Strip or rope lights are another option that can be placed around the edges of the patio or decking. Most of the fixtures can be bought from any good lighting store, or from more general stores such as argos online. The choice can be a bit overwhelming so ask the store assistant for some guidelines. Once you decided on the fixtures you will need to install them in the area. The general rule is to conceal any wiring if possible. Wires that can be seen should be stapled down, using an insulating staple. Most garden wiring is low voltage anyway, and is very safe to use, but try to hide them to improve the look of the garden in daylight hours.

Post lighting fixtures are probably the most difficult to conceal, so it may be case of running the wires down the back of the post and to the transformer. Yes, you will need a transformer to power all the lights. Most can simply plug into an existing outlet from inside the house. The size of transformer will depend on the total wattage of all the light fixtures. Add an extra 25% to the total so you do not overload the transformer. They can be purchased from home stores like littlewoods direct, or go to your local lighting showroom if you want specific advice. The best transformers can turn the lights on and off a certain times, or can use a photo sensitive cell that switches on the lights at dusk and then off at dawn. This takes away the hassle of doing it yourself, and is good if you are away on holiday and want to light the garden to keep any trespassers away. If you keep to your plan and take the time to install the lights properly, you will create an effective and beautiful looking lighting arrangement for your garden.

If you own your own home and have a backyard deck area you might consider adding some lighting effects for entertaining purposes. The types of patio lights you can purchase for use with holidays or entertaining are vast. You will find some more traditional styles such as the lantern shade type, which come in a few assorted colors. There is the traditional square lantern or the oriental round lantern shade. These lights come on a string or wire which can have as many as 10 to 12 lights on one string. If the deck has a rail, it is easy to hang these lights around the whole deck by attaching them to the rail.

For a patio area which does not have a rail unit around it, you could purchase some lantern lights which are designed to be set on the ground. These are larger items which are sold separately and use a candle to light them rather than an electric bulb. There are also other styles of ground candle lighting which are appropriate for use outdoors. The type of light you choose to use will reflect the atmosphere you want to create. For a soft romantic setting you could use a few subtle decorative lanterns.

A large two person hammock can also add to the romantic mood of the patio. These pieces are roomy and comfortable for two people to sit or lay in side by side. The various styles are available in a few color choices and also come with different types of stands. A hammock can be hung from a tree or used in conjunction with its own stand to be set up anywhere. You might also use the chair style of the hammock design. Using a few well placed lights and some comfortable seating will allow you and your family to spend some time in the evening enjoying your backyard area.

Low voltage deck lighting is a specialty item that can change your deck from just an ordinary pile of lumber into a magical space where you want to spend every possible moment. Instead of heading indoors, or turning on big, glaring bulbs that look like spotlights in the dark, you can install soft, glowing low voltage lights that create a cozy atmosphere that will keep you in your chair long after the sun goes down.

Post caps are the most common type of deck lighting. Exactly as the name implies, they sit on top of the 4 x 4 posts that are commonly used in deck railing sections. You can buy these in a variety of materials: powder coated aluminum, PVC vinyl, brass and cooper.  They typically cast a soft glow, rather than a bright light.

If you have steps to another level, they can be lit in a variety of ways. Recessed lights can be installed flush with the step itself, or set into the riser above each step. Plastic is the most common material for recessed step lights, but you’ll also find them in brass, copper and aluminum. Recessed lights are a bit more complicated to install because you must cut holes in either the steps or the risers, fit the light fixtures into the holes, and then work on the backside to do the wiring. But the end result is well worth the extra effort.

Another, more expensive option is illuminated decorative risers. These need to be installed while the stairs are being built, but the end result is a one of a kind set of steps that will be the talk of the town. The riser boards have decorative cutouts, covered by a light diffuser panel. The light bulbs are mounted behind the riser board so that all you see from the front is the shape or design that was cut from the wood.

For more general area lighting, there are surface mount lights that can be installed either at eye level for general illumination or near the deck to create a softer, glowing ambiance.

As with other types of low voltage lighting, there are kits designed specially for decks that include all of the lights and wiring you’ll need, plus the proper transformer. Or you can put together the individual components to create a custom lighting scheme. Low voltage lighting is simple to install, so there is no reason to abandon your deck just because the sun goes down.

Although not everyone can afford them, most people would prefer to have gardens surrounding their homes. They love to decorate their gardens with a variety of plants and ornaments. However, as the years have passed, there had been a lot of improvements in the knowledge of how to put together a beautifully landscaped garden and many people now have that knowledge. What are the main differences between the gardens in earlier times and the gardens nowadays? How would a solar garden light affect the overall atmosphere of a garden? And, could you change the atmosphere of your yard by using solar yard lighting?

In earlier times, gardens were usually ornamented with different kinds of flowers, trees and shrubs as well. Some were even planted with vegetables of different kinds. Ornaments were as simple as placing some hanging plants, colored stones and pebbles. Some plants were being trimmed and shaped in various ways to add to the style.

On the other hand, gardens nowadays are more advanced. Various forms of decorations are now being used to further beautify the gardens. Aside from trimming some plants and putting some stones and pebbles, garden lights are also placed in gardens. A number of people have already started using solar garden lights for a number of reasons. First, they do not have to worry about having to pay for huge electric bills as these lights do not require electricity. They get their power directly from the sun. Another thing is that these lights are a lot easier to install and place in the garden. They do not require the use of extensions when you want to place them in farther areas. Also, you could sleep and leave these lights on because they have automatic sensors that turn off the lights at dawn.

Decorating gardens have never been this easy and fun until some wonderful improvements came into view. Solar powered garden lighting definitely set the trend in decorating and beautifying gardens in this technologically advanced generation. And, by using solar yard lighting you are giving yourself that extra bit of security which is essentially these days.

Solar garden lighting has developed significantly in recent years. With more people growing gardens indoors there are many different options for lighting. The most popular are called HID lights; they are either high pressure sodium (HPS) or metal halide (MH). Choosing the right lights is important and depends on what you are growing. Fluorescent lighting is used in the beginning stages of establishing a plant.

It is suggested by most experts to have a system that is set up to cycle with your plants. Use fluorescent garden lights to get the plants started because you do not want to over expose them while they are young. Once they have established a good growth under fluorescent lighting, it is time to move to the MH or metal halide lighting for the vegetative stage of growth. HPS lighting is best for the flowering stage of a plants cycle; though they can be used for all three phases of growth.

In the beginning, the plants should receive light 24 hours a day under fluorescent lights. When changing to the vegetative state most indoor gardens are set with a timer to provide 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark. Flowering plants require the light be reduced to only 12 hours light and 12 hours of dark. This is a general idea as to light timing and it is important that you cycle your lights so they suite what you are growing.

Indoor gardens are popular in many northern states and the technology has advanced rapidly in the last ten years. Hydroponics gardening is the newest style of indoor gardening that many people are starting to try. This style of gardening is based on using water rather than soil to feed the roots of the plant. Hydroponics gardens that are indoors need garden lighting and it is important to be clear that your lighting is consistent with the needs of the plants you are growing.

Adding lights to your garden is a great way to cheaply add some interest to your garden. By using different types of lighting you can create a superb ambience that you can enjoy all year round. As side from safety issues there are  two very important points that need to be considered when choosing how to light your garden, these points are; how much will they contribute to light pollution and will they deter any nocturnal wildlife. When looking at each of the below suggestions be sure to consider there environmental impact. Here are four suggestions of lights that could be used together or individually:

Post Lights
Lights that are suspended from at waist height or less are generally referred to as post lights. The evolution from traditional lanterns stakes in to the ground is clear, they are however available in a range of formats from the more traditional to contemporary designs. Unless you are intending on concreting the post lights in place they are not ideal for a garden that has boisterous dogs or children than like to play outdoors, but if this isn’t an issue they make ideal patio lights.

Brick Lights
Brick lights as their name suggest are usually place within walls at the time of building the wall. With a bit of elbow grease they can easily be fitted afterward by chiselling out a brick and inserting the light. Brick lights tend to have baffles which point the light down on to the ground and consequently  the ambient light they produce is very appealing. Other forms of brick light feature low power LED so that the bricks emit a soft glow which is ideal for not discouraging wildlife or contributing to the issuer of light pollution.

Ground Lights
Similar to decorative lights, ground lights are sunken in to the ground and point light upwards. They will however look stunning, highlight step edges and illuminate specimen plants and tree’s beautifully. It does have to be noted that ground lights do contribute greatly to light pollution, so please think carefully before you use them.

Decorative Lights
This sorts of lights are great for adding some interest in any garden. Lights classifieds as decorative lights are generally reserved for those that don’t give out a useable light. Lantern string lights and other types of string lights are a good example of this sort of lighting. Decorative lights definitely should not be discounted though as they can add a real depth to any garden without deterring any wildlife that may visit.

I would highly recommend solar powered decorative lights as they offer greater flexibility as to where you can position them.

If you have a nice, modern patio, and you wish to enjoy it even in cold weather, investing in an outdoor propane heater makes a ton of sense. These units are easy to operate, provide effective heat, and are available in a broad selection of styles, making them easy to incorporate into your patio in a visually pleasing way. Read on to learn how a outdoor propane heater will enable you to make the most of your outside areas.

How Do Outdoor Propane Heaters Work?

Outdoor propane heaters contain heating elements, sometimes known as burners, which are heated by igniting liquid propane. The heating elements need to be able to absorb and radiate heat, therefore ceramic is often used, as it is a material with these properties. Outdoor units typically utilize only radiation heat, unlike indoor heaters which often use a fan to distribute the heat. This means that outdoor heaters has a smaller heating radius, but also that the heat won’t be blown away by wind.

In What Ways Can an Outdoor Heater be Used?

The primary function of outdoor heaters is to enable homeowners to enjoy their outdoor patios even in colder months and seasons. It thus extends the amount of hours during the year that can be spent outside. But this is not the only way to use these units. If you have a jacuzzi installed outside, placing a heater between the house and the jacuzzi, will make walking between the two much more comfortable, when the weather is not as hot as you would like. Finally, if you are throwing a party in your garden, strategically placing heaters will make the guests more comfortable and can make the party go on longer.

If you have spent time, money, and energy on your outside areas, extending how much time you will be able to spent there will make this effort even more worthwhile. For this purpose, nothing beats outdoor propane heaters.
